Iran shuts down Google Mail

In a move ahead of Thursday’s 31st anniversary of the creation of Iran’s Islamic Republic, the national telecoms agency in Tehran said that it will ban Gmail and will instead facilitate its own national email service. Bush, Arnie top English gobbledegook poll

Former US president George W. Bush topped a poll of the worst examples of mangled English released Wednesday, followed closely by Arnold Schwarzenegger and Donald Rumsfeld. French footballer-cum-philospher Eric Cantona and former US president Bill Clinton also produced prime examples of gobbledegook, according to the online poll of 4,000 people inspired by the Plain English Campaign. Notoriously language-challenged Bushromped to the top accolade for his: “Our enemies are innovative and resourceful and so are we. Shanghai seeks end to ‘Chinglish’

The authorities in the Chinese city of Shanghai are starting a campaign to try to spot and correct badly phrased English on signs in public places. Chinglish, as the inaccurate use of the language is known, has long been a source of embarrassment for the authorities there. It is also a source of amusement to foreign visitors. But Shanghai wants to spruce up its image. It is expecting millions of visitors for the World Expo fair. Student volunteers will check the English on signs throughout the city. If they suspect the translation is less than accurate they will inform the government. Then the bureaucrats will request that whoever is responsible corrects the mistake.
