Irish accent beats French as world’s sexiest

The Irish accent has beaten its French counterpart as the world’s sexiest, thanks to stars like Colin Farrell and James Nesbitt. Men with an Emerald Isle brogue came top in a poll of 5,000 women worldwide, while the French accent only came fourth, just ahead of Australian. Italian, the native language of stars such as jockey Frankie Dettori, was second. In third place was the Scottish burr, made famous by actor Sean Connery. English was sixth and Swedish was seventh, with Spanish, Welsh and American completing the top 10. A spokesman for www.OnePoll.com, which carried out the international survey, blamed French president Nicolas Sarkozy for the French accent’s fall from grace. “The French accent is nowhere near as popular as it used to be,” he said. “You can probably blame Nicolas Sarkozy for that, he has single-handedly … Read entire article »

‘Metrotextuals’ seal messages with a kiss

Men have become so openly affectionate with each other using mobile technology that they’ve taken to signing off text messages to male friends with a kiss (x), giving rise to a new generation dubbed “Metrotextuals”. New research from mobile phone firm T-Mobile reveals nearly a quarter of men (22 percent) regularly include a kiss on texts to their male mates, T-Mobile said in a statement. “Metrotextuality” is most widespread among 18-24 year old males with three quarters (75 percent) regularly sealing texts with a kiss and 48 percent admitting that the practice has become commonplace among their group of friends. Nearly a quarter of this age group (23 percent) even appreciate an ‘x’ in a text exchange from people that aren’t close friends. But it’s not just younger men that have become Metrotextuals – … Read entire article »

No one wants black cats

Halloween is a bad time of year for black cats, with their long-standing connections with witches, hubble-bubble and evil. Reports of deliberate cruelty to black cats rise especially in the weeks around Halloween in Britain, the RSPCA animal charity said on Wednesday. But it seems that not only do people treat black cats badly in October — they shun them for the rest of the year too. Black cats at animal shelters take longer than others to find homes, probably because of all the superstitions surrounding them, the charity said. “Unfortunately, black cats often do spend longer in our rehoming centres than others as they are frequently overlooked by potential owners,” said shelter manager Beverly Leavy. “But their fur color makes no difference to how much love they have to give,” she added. “The cats … Read entire article »

Clearly, Obama must love this phrase

For all his flourish, President Barack Obama sure falls back on a few familiar phrases. Make no mistake. Change isn’t easy. It won’t happen overnight. There will be setbacks and false starts. Those who routinely listen to the president have come to expect some of those expressions to pop up in almost every speech. Yet in the portfolio of presidential phrases, none is more pervasive than Obama’s four-word favorite: Let me be clear. It is his emphatic windup for, well, everything. “Let me be clear,” he said in describing his surprise at winning the Nobel Peace Prize(speech). “I do not view it as a recognition of my own accomplishments, but rather as an affirmation of American leadership on behalf of aspirations held by people in all nations.” “Let me be clear,” he said in one of … Read entire article »
