Little Havana

For a taste of Hispanic culture head to this neighbourhood, south of Downtown, which is filled with art galleries, quirky shops and Cuban restaurants. Maximo Gomez Park is a great place for a wander past men huddled around outdoor tables, playing dominoes and smoking cigars. Cutural Fridays (Viernes Culturales) are free monthly events showcasing local musicians and outdoor art.

Miami Art Museum
Entry to the Miami Art Museum, which has a strong programme for school-age visitors, is free for families with children on every second Saturday of the month from 1-4pm. A 29-acre Museum Park, set to be the museum’s new home, opens in 2013.

Metromover ride
This is a free, driverless sky train that connects many of the city’s hotels in Downtown with the Metrorail. Handily, the three loops also stop at interesting sites, including the ornate Freedom Tower and the Miami-Dade Cultural Centre (for the art museum and city library). Avoid the crowds outside of commuting times and take a quick tour from College/Bayside station to the skyscrapers of the financial district at Brickell.
